PRACTICAL GUIDE 4 MIN READ

Is there an app to see Instagram story viewer history?

Instagram's own story-viewer list is visible to the story's owner only while the story is active; it is not retrievable afterward. No app can show a reliable 'history' of past story viewers, because Instagram does not expose that data to any third party, past or present.

Illustrative example only. A completed scan reflects public data available at that time, not an exact event history.

Too long; read this

Bottom lineNo. Only the account that posted a story can see who viewed it, and only while that story is still active (up to 24 hours). Once a story expires, Instagram does not make its viewer list available to the owner or to any third-party app, so there is no reliable way for any app, including Lurke, to show a story-viewer history.
What to check
  • Check the viewer list only while the story is still active
  • Treat any app's claimed 'story history' feature with skepticism
  • Never give an app your Instagram password to unlock this

Short answer: no. Instagram shows the list of people who viewed a story only to the account that posted it, and only while that story is still active. Once a story expires, Instagram does not keep that viewer list available to anyone, including the account owner, through the app. No third-party app, including Lurke, can show a “story-viewer history” for stories that have already expired, because Instagram does not make that data available to any app after the fact.

What Instagram actually shows for story viewers

While your own story is active, Instagram lets you see who has viewed it, directly in the app. That view is tied to the specific active story and to your own account; it is not a public figure visible to other people, and it is not something you can see for someone else's story. Once the story expires, that specific viewer list is no longer presented in the app in the same way, and it is not something Instagram exposes to third-party developers at any point, active or expired.

Why no app can show more than Instagram does

A story-viewer list is private data belonging to the account that posted the story, not public profile data like a Followers or Following list. Instagram does not publish a developer interface that returns story-viewer identities, active or historical, to outside apps. That means an app offering to show you someone else's story viewers, or a history of your own past story viewers, is not pulling that information from Instagram, because Instagram does not make it available to pull.

Red flags if an app claims to do this

  • It asks for your Instagram password or login inside the app. That is the most common way an app tries to work around not actually having access to private data it is claiming to show. See our guide on evaluating the safety of a follow/story-tracking app before entering any Instagram credentials anywhere other than the official Instagram app.
  • It promises to show another account's story viewers. That data belongs only to the account that posted the story; no app can retrieve it for a different account.
  • It shows generic, unverifiable sample results. A screenshot of a feature existing is not proof that the underlying data is real.

What is actually possible

You can see who viewed your own story directly in Instagram, in real time, while that specific story is still active. That is Instagram's own feature, built into its app, and it does not require a third-party app at all. Beyond that window, there is currently no documented, reliable way, through Instagram or through any outside app, to retrieve who viewed a story that has already expired.

Where Lurke fits

Lurke does not offer story-viewer tracking of any kind. Lurke tracks follower and following changes for public Instagram profiles, comparing completed scans to show newly detected followers, unfollowers, accounts a profile started following, and accounts that don't follow back. That is a different task from story viewing, and we want to be clear about that boundary rather than imply a feature we don't have. See the Lurke app overview for what it actually tracks.

When the answer is still unknown

  • The story is still active: check the viewer list directly in Instagram's own app; no third-party app is needed.
  • The story has already expired: there is no reliable way to retrieve that viewer list afterward.
  • An app claims otherwise: treat that claim with the same skepticism as any claim to show private data Instagram doesn't expose, especially if it asks for your password.

This guide is published by Lurke. Product details and scan behavior should be checked against the current app and public data available when a scan completes.
